FAQs
What is PAT testing?
Portable appliance testing (PAT) is a safety precaution that ensures the electrical appliances used by places of employment, service or hire will not cause damage or injury to employees, customers or renters.
What items must be PAT tested?
Equipment that should be tested includes items such as: PCs, monitors, printers, toasters, kettles, and larger items such as photocopiers and vending machines.
How do you test a bathroom extractor fan?
A DIY test would be the toilet paper test: take two pieces of toilet paper, turn the fan on and put the paper up to the fan. The fan should suck the paper up and the paper should stay attached to the fan. If it doesn’t, then all your fan is doing is making noise.
Why is my bathroom extractor fan not working?
There can be a number of reasons why a bathroom extractor fan might not be working. Sometimes, it’s all about good maintenance.
Humidity and dust particles go through your extractor fan every time you take a shower. This makes it the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, mould and mildew. If you don’t clean your extractor fan, it will eventually get blocked. Another reason could be related to the electrical wiring or even that the motor needs replacing. Whichever is the case our qualified electricians are on hand to help!
What is an EICR?
An electrical installation condition report (EICR) is an in-depth inspection of your property’s electrical systems and installation. The report assesses the competency of your electrics by three different categories:
- C1 – this indicates that danger exists and will need immediate attention.
- C2 – this indicates that there is the potential for danger and advises urgent attention.
- C3 – this indicates that the electrics pose no danger but still recommends the improvement of the electrical system.
How do I know if I need an EICR?
As of June 2020, all properties within the private rented sector require a satisfactory EICR which must be renewed every 5 years.
So, whether you’re a business owner, landlord or homeowner, it’s important you carry out regular checks on the condition of the electrics in your property.
